The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers.

Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.

All interns must be fully vaccinated for covid-19 prior to the start of their internship.

Project Description:

The intern will be an integral part of the Division of Interpretation, Education, and Volunteers during the busy summer season, providing park orientation and presenting interpretive programs. There will be two crucial parts to the intern’s work. One will be to provide visitor services at the Kohm Yah-Mah-Nee Visitor Center throughout the internship. In addition to this, the intern will learn some of the foundational interpretive programs and talks and be expected to provide them. The second part will be to support evening astronomy programs and impart the value of dark skies.

  • The intern will help promote Lassen Volcanic National Park by providing programs during Latino Conservation Week in mid-July.

  • The intern will help build Lassen's social media presence through photography and writing.

  • The intern will gain valuable experience in informal and formal interpretation by working at the Kohm Yah-Mah-Nee visitor center providing park orientation, conducting roves, and delivering park programs.

  • The intern will work with interpretive staff to create or translate into Spanish handouts on fire ecology, safety, and hazards.

Intern Qualifications:

Interns selected for the NPSCF Program should possess:

  • Coursework that demonstrates relevancy for interpretation and visitor services (communications, history, ethnic studies, anthropology, English, journalism, etc.).

  • Ability to effectively work independently and with others.

  • Must be detail oriented and a team player.

  • Must wear uniform piece provided by the park or the Latino Heritage Intern Program and the National Park Service.

  • Social media experience (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).

  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.

  • Bilingual Spanish - English

  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience

  • Strategic thinking ability

  • The ability to self-start/work independently

  • Flexibility/resourcefulness

  • The ability to adapt new skills and ideas to the public sector

Physical/Natural Environment: The housing and park headquarters setting is at roughly 5000 ft. in a campus-like setting with a cluster of work buildings devoted to different park divisions and park housing. This area is a 13 minute drive away from the park proper. Therefore, there are no visitors walking around the park headquarters. The main duty station will be Kohm Yah-Mah-Nee visitor center, which is at about 6700 ft. Stunning views around the park's visitor center of the surrounding forest and mountains. This is a rural mountain environment with the closest towns are in Chester and Red Bluff, 30 minutes and 45 minutes away, respectively, for groceries, hardware stores, clinics, retail establishments, and other amenities. Redding and Chico are about one to one and half hours away, respectively, with the latter being a college town. Both have Latino populations and organizations that would be ideal for outreach.

Work Environment: This is a rural mountain area so there will be an adjustment to elevation. Summers can be in the 90s but it generally goes down to the 50s or 60s at night. The work will likely be 50% office --in terms of projects and visitor service support-- and 50% field in terms of being out in the park doing programs and roving. There are interns in other divisions and I am happy to connect all the interns throughout the summer.
